Why the number of repetitions is low in Pilates

Joseph Pilates spoke of mindless repetition, referencing that a high rate of repetitions invariably becomes mindless and produces diminishing returns.

Being mindful in each exercise and each repetition is the goal, and that is why most exercises are between 5-10 repetitions, depending on the intensity and complexity of the movement. Think about the complexity and intensity of ‘Teaser’ - 10 repetitions would be challenging to maintain good form and control. The more complex the movement, the fewer the repetitions required.

Ultimately, we want to remember that Pilates has a purpose - to keep you moving well in all the things you do and activities/ sports you enjoy. If you were to do repetitions until you were exhausted and likely lose proper form, you would miss out on all Pilates can offer you. By focusing on the precision of the movement and awareness of your breath, those 5-10 repetitions of a single exercise, can leave you ready in body and mind to complete a full 60 minute class, and reap all the benefits!
